Sarasota History: Sanderling Club

Allison Werner November 9, 2020

Sanderling Club has a unique history that imbues it with mid-century charm, gorgeous ecology, and an Old Florida nostalgia that is rare even on our beautiful sunny shores.

SHAPED BY HISTORY

I bet you didn’t know that the ultra-desirable beachfront neighborhood of Sanderling Club on Siesta Key is here today thanks to a catastrophic hurricane in 1921. The hurricane’s sustained 140 mph (!!!) winds sealed off an old pass into Sarasota Bay, creating Heron Lagoon, which later became one of the many endearing features of this established community. This same hurricane coincidentally repurposed the bayfront area of downtown, as it destroyed warehouses and fish houses located along the precious waterfront. The city used the disaster as an opportunity to repurpose the waterline as recreation space, to be enjoyed by the public.

PILLARS OF THE SARASOTA MODERN MOVEMENT

A couple decades after this border-defining hurricane, noted developer Elbridge Boyd spotted the ideal location for a private residential beach club neighborhood, located on the turf south of Point of Rocks. He began construction on the community, which was designed with the mid-century architecture trend of bringing the outside in and honoring nature. All that was needed was their beacon clubhouse. Enter Paul Rudolph, local architect and one of the founding fathers of the Sarasota Modern architectural movement, who designed the beachfront cabanas, clubhouse and observation tower.

UNIQUE HOMES MARRIED TO NATURE

The final product of Boyd’s vision, located behind a gated entry, is a sprawling community of all-waterfront homes that blend seamlessly with the nature surrounding them. It was not until 1974 that the The Sanderling Club was created – a social club which provides beach access and amenities to the 110 property owners and annual associates. Each of the individual cabana units is leased annually by club members, often remaining in the same family for years.

It will be clear how special this property is as soon as you arrive… As you enter Sanderling through the gated, canopied drive, a natural reaction to the Old-Florida scenery is to exhale and just breathe in the serenity that surrounds you. Meander through the mature trees and large lots to the generous circle drive where an unpretentious entry leads to the perfect hideaway. Everything in this house is generously sized while still providing a feeling of warmth and coziness, and you will enjoy pretty views of the tropical landscaping through large windows and sliding doors throughout, so even while indoors the connection to nature is maintained here. Perched on sparkling Heron Lagoon, there is a large pool plus usable outdoor space that wraps around the entire property – with so many options, you won’t know where to sit and take it all in from first! If you are searching for a space of tranquility and ease, either as an escape from the busy-ness of modern life or for your full-time enjoyment, you have certainly found it here.

This neighborhood is unlike any other on Siesta Key or in Sarasota and it is the perfect place to relax and recharge. A 24-hour manned gate means an excellent feeling of security, and the private beach with a Paul Rudolph-designed community center and cabanas simply cannot be beat! There are also tennis courts and boat docks available, plus the location is very convenient to mainland Sarasota: just a hop, skip, and jump and you are over the bridge with easy access to stores and restaurants. However, once you install yourself at this tropical oasis, we suspect that leaving will be the last thing on your mind.
